Be careful if you already downloaded EPUB

An EPUB download changes what you can do with the current loan.

EPUB already downloaded

Libby says this loan cannot then be sent to Kindle from Libby unless you borrow it again.

Before returning anything

Check your usable reading route and whether another loan is available. A hold may be needed; immediate reborrowing is not guaranteed.

This is the documented format-selection rule, not a test on your loan. Keep a working reading option available and check the exact title before considering another loan.

Libby says that if you downloaded EPUB or another format in Libby or on the library's OverDrive website, you cannot send that loan to Kindle from Libby unless you borrow it again. Libby's format-selection explanation

Do not return your current loan just to test a button. Check whether you can read it with an available option and whether another loan is obtainable. The quick-start guide says unavailable copies may require a hold, so do not assume immediate reborrowing. Borrowing and holds in Libby

For example, your U.S. library listing offers Kindle, but you downloaded EPUB yesterday. If your current reading route works, keep reading now and choose a format deliberately on a future eligible loan.

When Kindle is offered, follow the handoff once

When Kindle is offered, check the account during the Amazon handoff.
  1. 1 Shelf → Loans

    Open the intended library loan.

  2. 2 Read With… → Kindle

    Choose Kindle where offered.

  3. 3 Amazon website

Sign in if prompted. Check the intended account before selecting Get Library Book.

  4. 4 Associated Kindle devices

If the handoff is complete but the book is missing on the ereader, use the separate delivery help.

This is a summary of Libby’s published Kindle ereader procedure. No Amazon sign-in, borrowing, return or delivery test was performed. A Fire tablet’s Libby route is different from a Kindle ereader.

Libby's published ereader procedure is Shelf → Loans → Read With… → Kindle. It then opens Amazon's website, where you sign in if prompted and select Get Library Book. Libby says the book appears on devices associated with that Amazon account. Check that you are using the intended account before confirming. Libby's Kindle ereader instructions

If you have already completed that step, a missing book on the ereader is a later delivery problem. Use Libby's Amazon-to-Kindle delivery help to investigate that stage. Repeating reading-preference changes does not establish what happened after the Amazon handoff.

Keep the Libby route available

For an ebook that offers reading in Libby, you can use the Libby app on a supported phone or tablet. On a compatible computer browser, use libbyapp.com. The web version requires an internet connection; it is a different route from sending a book to a Kindle ereader. Supported Libby devices / Libby quick-start guide

A Fire tablet is also different from a Kindle ereader: Libby's Kindle help recommends installing and reading with Libby on Fire instead. Choose the route for the device you actually have, then the reading option offered for the book. Ereader and Fire guidance

Before your next step, check these five things in order:

  1. Library: which collection supplied this loan, using a card you are entitled to use.
  2. Title: the exact book listing you want to read.
  3. Reading choices: the options in its Read With section or Manage Loan menu.
  4. Selected format: whether you have already downloaded EPUB or another format.
  5. Delivery stage: whether you have reached Amazon and completed the handoff.

Use those checks to find an offered Kindle choice, read through Libby, or investigate delivery after the Amazon handoff.
